An undertrial prisoner in Mathura district jail, Uttar Pradesh, died by suicide reportedly due to distress over not securing bail. The deceased, identified as Suresh from Govardhan, had been incarcerated since May 2025 under the NDPS Act. The incident occurred when Suresh, after an unusually long time in the toilet, was found hanging by jail constables.
The jail staff immediately intervened upon discovering Suresh and rushed him to the jail hospital for emergency treatment. Despite efforts, he could not be saved and succumbed at the district hospital. Preliminary information suggests that Suresh was under mental stress due to the prolonged delay in obtaining bail, as confirmed by Mathura Jail Superintendent Anshuman Garg.
Suresh’s family had sought relief from the Allahabad High Court, but his case could not be heard even on March 24, leading to increased frustration for the prisoner. The incident has prompted a formal inquiry to determine the circumstances surrounding the suicide and to assess any potential lapses in monitoring or care. Further actions will be based on the investigation’s findings.
