Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan criticized Mamata Banerjee, the Trinamool Congress chief, for her refusal to voluntarily resign as the outgoing Chief Minister. Pradhan expressed concern over what he termed as the Trinamool Congress’s resistance to being held accountable and its rejection of the public’s mandate in Bengal.
Pradhan highlighted that the situation in Bengal reflects a challenge to democracy, with power being perceived as an entitlement rather than a responsibility. He emphasized the importance of accepting electoral verdicts and raised questions about the treatment of mandates as mere suggestions open to rejection.
The Union Minister pointed out that Mamata Banerjee’s defiance and refusal to accept the mandate signify a broader issue within the governance system. He underscored the significance of humility after a public mandate and criticized the Trinamool Congress for clinging to power and undermining democratic institutions like the Election Commission of India and security forces.
Referring to the governance model in Bengal, Pradhan mentioned a history of intimidation, syndicate networks, and entrenched political patronage. He emphasized the need for accountability in governance and highlighted the rejection of fear, coercion, and demand for accountability as reflected in the mandate of Bengal.
