Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda inaugurated a national summit in Chandigarh, showcasing innovative practices in the health sector. Reflecting on India’s healthcare transformation, he highlighted the shift towards holistic healthcare under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s guidance. The country has moved from a curative approach to a comprehensive framework, focusing on preventive, promotive, curative, and palliative aspects.
A significant milestone has been the implementation of the National Health Policy 2017, ensuring a more inclusive healthcare system. Over 1.85 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandirs now act as primary healthcare centers, offering preventive services like screening for diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and cancers. The Minister noted an increase in institutional deliveries and a decline in Maternal Mortality Ratio, showcasing improved maternal healthcare access.
India has made substantial progress in disease control, with a significant decrease in under-five and infant mortality rates. Despite its large population, India contributes minimally to the global malaria burden. Tuberculosis incidence has also decreased faster than the global average, with a treatment coverage of 92%. The Summit, attended by Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and Health Minister Arti Singh Rao, aims to promote inclusive and affordable healthcare nationwide.
J.P. Nadda praised the state’s healthcare leadership and emphasized the importance of practical strategies in shaping a responsive public health system. The initiatives launched aim to enhance the working environment of frontline healthcare workers and improve service delivery. The focus is on creating efficient, integrated systems that cater to the needs of both providers and beneficiaries.
