Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to lead the 73rd plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) in Shillong, Meghalaya. The meeting, scheduled for Thursday, will also see Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) and Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia in attendance. Governors and Chief Ministers from all eight Northeastern states are expected to participate in the session, which focuses on coordinating development efforts in the region.
The NEC, a 55-year-old regional council, is crucial for planning and implementing development projects in the Northeast. A recent post by the NEC highlighted the significance of the upcoming gathering in fostering growth, connectivity, and sustainable development in the region. Mizoram Governor General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh (Retd) recently reviewed the state’s readiness for the plenary session, emphasizing the Centre’s dedication to Northeastern states’ progress.
During the preparatory meeting, Mizoram officials discussed follow-up actions from the previous NEC Plenary Session in Agartala. Various projects, including those funded by the NEC and the Ministry of DoNER, were reviewed. These initiatives, such as NESIDS (Roads), NESIDS (OTRI), and PM-DevINE projects, aim to enhance infrastructure and boost socio-economic growth in Mizoram. The meeting also addressed key proposals for the NEC Plenary Session, focusing on Mizoram’s welfare, infrastructure, and economic development.
The review meeting was attended by officials from different departments, including the General Administration Department’s Principal Secretary Sudhir Kumar. The session aimed to ensure Mizoram’s priorities are effectively presented at the upcoming NEC Plenary Session in Shillong.
