Union Home Minister Amit Shah traveled to Baramati on Wednesday after a plane crash claimed the lives of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and five others. Ajit Pawar’s family members and NCP(SP) MP Supriya Sule are also expected to depart for Mumbai shortly. Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde is scheduled to arrive in Baramati later in the day, with the state government canceling all official events in light of the tragedy.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah had a telephonic discussion with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis following the Baramati plane crash involving Deputy CM Ajit Pawar. Officials from the Maharashtra government briefed PM Modi and HM Shah on the accident and provided updates on the situation. The plane crash near Baramati claimed the lives of Deputy CM Ajit Pawar and five others, confirmed by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
The aircraft crashed during landing near Baramati, resulting in fire, smoke, and the wreckage of the plane. Ambulances were seen rushing the injured to nearby hospitals, with individuals at the crash site offering assistance. The incident occurred around 9 a.m., an hour after the plane departed from Mumbai. Dy CM Ajit Pawar’s family members were en route to Baramati when the tragedy unfolded, coincidentally departing from Delhi.
Amid ongoing elections for Zilla Parishads and Panchayat Samitis, Deputy CM Ajit Pawar was en route from Mumbai to Baramati for a public meeting. Emergency services and senior security officials have reached the crash site in Baramati, with rescue teams mobilized immediately after the aircraft lost control during landing. Three bodies were taken to Baramati Medical College, with identification procedures underway as confirmed by the Pune Superintendent of Police (SP).
A team of DGCA officials has arrived at the crash site, with further details awaited on the incident. Locals reportedly rushed to the scene upon witnessing the plane crash. This incident follows a series of aviation-related incidents for the leader, including a helicopter crash in Pune in October 2024 and previous emergency landings due to adverse weather conditions in the region.
