Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya recently led a high-level ministerial meeting with a New Zealand sports delegation to enhance bilateral cooperation in sports. The meeting aimed at strengthening ties between the sporting ecosystems of both countries, with a special focus on the upcoming 100-year anniversary of sporting relations between India and New Zealand in 2026.
The discussions revolved around building on the historical sporting connections between the two nations, particularly highlighting the 1926 Indian Army hockey tour to New Zealand as a significant milestone. Both sides explored new avenues for cooperation and sports diplomacy to deepen their relationship further.
Key officials from India, including Shri Hari Ranjan Rao, Secretary (Sports), and representatives from various sports bodies, engaged in talks with the New Zealand delegation led by Chris Bishop, Associate Minister for Sport and Recreation. The discussions identified priority sports areas for collaboration, such as rugby, rowing, canoeing, sailing, athletics, and cycling, to enhance mutual engagement and development.
The meeting also laid the groundwork for the India–New Zealand Centenary Sports Cooperation Programme 2026, a comprehensive initiative aimed at commemorating the 100-year milestone through expanded collaboration in sports development, high-performance training, innovation, and cultural exchange. Both countries expressed a shared commitment to fostering sports cooperation and leveraging the centenary partnership for the benefit of athletes, coaches, and sports ecosystems in India and New Zealand.
