With Union Minister George Kurian resigning from his Rajya Sabha term, questions arise about Kerala’s representation in the Union Council of Ministers led by PM Narendra Modi. Kurian, a long-time BJP leader, stepped down after his term ended, and President Droupadi Murmu accepted his resignation. It is uncertain whether Kurian will take on a national or state-level role within the party.
Sources suggest that Kurian may focus on organisational duties in Kerala, where he has shown interest. Initially inducted into the Modi government in 2024 as Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, Kurian’s unexpected entry into the Cabinet surprised many as he was not a member of Parliament at the time. Following his resignation from the Rajya Sabha, he becomes the fourth BJP leader from Kerala to exit the Union Cabinet without a second term.
The BJP has historically brought Kerala leaders to the Rajya Sabha before appointing them to ministerial positions. Notable figures like O. Rajagopal, K. J. Alphons, and V. Muraleedharan followed a similar trajectory. Kurian, a lawyer by profession, has held various organisational roles within the BJP and faced challenges in his electoral pursuits in Kerala. The current sole BJP representative from Kerala in the Union Cabinet is Suresh Gopi, who achieved a significant victory in the Thrissur Lok Sabha constituency.
