Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri stressed the value of criticism in India’s democracy, cautioning against negative fatalism from certain experts driven more by politics than academic rigor. He highlighted the need for responsible public debate in 2026, urging for a disciplined approach rather than baseless insinuations and shoot-and-scoot economic analyses. Puri criticized a trend in commentary that oversimplifies reform efforts, portraying every hiccup as a permanent failure, and undermining the country’s progress.

In response to claims of unreliable data sets, lack of inclusive growth, and crony capitalism, Puri defended the government’s commitment to challenging reforms under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. He emphasized the importance of tangible results over pessimism, advocating for a balance between scrutiny and responsible criticism. Puri underscored the necessity of separating scepticism from pessimism, highlighting the arduous yet crucial process of driving positive change in a nation of over 1.4 billion people.

Addressing concerns about trust in statistics and markets, Puri called for accountability in expertise and a shift away from fatalistic narratives. He expressed disappointment in professionals resorting to negative posturing and urged for a more constructive approach to national discourse. Puri cited significant advancements like the GST system and digital payment infrastructure as evidence of India’s progress in enhancing transparency and accountability.
