Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized that the global semiconductor industry is in need of approximately 10 lakh skilled professionals, creating a significant opening for India to become a leading provider of talent for the sector. Speaking at the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) center in Patna, Vaishnaw noted that the industry, currently valued at around $800 billion, is poised to exceed $1 trillion in the near future.
India is urged to seize this opportunity by focusing on semiconductor design and manufacturing, as per Vaishnaw. The minister highlighted the government’s efforts to establish top-notch semiconductor design capabilities within the country and ensure that Indian graduates are equipped with world-class training to meet industry demands. He stressed the importance of Indian students excelling in semiconductor design skills to secure global employment opportunities.
Vaishnaw mentioned that over 75,000 students have already benefited from semiconductor design-related programs, with plans to increase this number to 5 lakh students. Furthermore, he disclosed that semiconductor manufacturing activities have commenced in India, with training programs for manufacturing skills set to expand alongside production capacities.
India’s semiconductor mission is actively promoting design, fabrication, and packaging projects across the nation. During his visit to STPI, Vaishnaw underscored the government’s initiative to broaden India’s startup ecosystem beyond major cities by strengthening STPI centers in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities to foster innovation and entrepreneurship. He engaged with young entrepreneurs to understand their perspectives and explore avenues for enhanced government support to startups and technology-driven enterprises.
