Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jyotiraditya Scindia visited the Orchidarium in Gangtok, Sikkim, as part of his three-day tour of the state. He commended the state government’s efforts in promoting tourism and conserving biodiversity. Scindia, attending Sikkim’s 50th Statehood Day celebrations, praised the Orchidarium for showcasing the state’s floral diversity and natural beauty.
During the visit, Gangtok Municipal Corporation Commissioner Gary Chopel highlighted the Orchidarium’s increasing popularity, especially after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Sikkim. Tourist footfall at the site has risen significantly, with a surge of over 300% following the Prime Minister’s mention of it during his engagements in the state. The Orchidarium has now become a key attraction for tourists and dignitaries alike.
Scindia also acknowledged the state government’s focus on enhancing tourism infrastructure and praised the Orchidarium as a testament to Sikkim’s dedication to ecological conservation and sustainable tourism. Earlier, he participated in tea leaf plucking at the Temi Tea Garden in Namchi district and attended the Sikkim Premier League football tournament as the chief guest at Bhaichung Stadium.
The Union Minister’s visit is crucial for Sikkim, with expectations of increased central support for infrastructure expansion, tourism promotion, and development projects in the region.
