Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, H.D. Kumaraswamy, and Janata Dal (Secular) leader, criticized the Congress government in Karnataka for allegedly concealing farmer suicide cases. Kumaraswamy referred to National Crime Records Bureau data, revealing 2,423 farmer and agricultural laborer suicides in 2023 and 2,971 in 2024. He questioned the government’s awareness of these figures and accused it of neglecting farmers’ well-being.
Expressing shock over a newspaper report on the rise in farmer suicides, Kumaraswamy condemned the state government for prioritizing celebratory events over addressing the issue. He accused the government of extravagantly spending on public conventions while farmers faced distress. Kumaraswamy also questioned the efficacy of the government’s welfare schemes, highlighting the ongoing farmer suicides despite these initiatives.
The Union Minister further criticized the government for allegedly coercing officials to boost attendance at its events. He accused the government of neglecting farmers’ issues while promoting revenue-related initiatives. Kumaraswamy challenged Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar over a proposed project and called for a public debate. He emphasized the need for the government to act in farmers’ interests and reconsider its approach.
Kumaraswamy announced the potential joining of former Member of Legislative Assembly Akhanda Srinivas Murthy to the Janata Dal (Secular). He mentioned discussions on party strengthening during a visit to Murthy’s residence in Bengaluru. Several party leaders accompanied Kumaraswamy during the visit, indicating potential growth within the Janata Dal (Secular).
