Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has given the green light for the construction of a 4-lane Thiruvarur Bypass on the Nagapattinam–Thanjavur section of NH-83 in Tamil Nadu, costing Rs 1,427.61 crore. This project, covering 14.9 kilometers, will also involve the building of two additional Road Over Bridges (ROBs) on NH-129A and NH-134A, as per the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
The new bypass is expected to enhance connectivity between major industrial centers such as Tiruchirappalli and Coimbatore and the port towns of Karaikal and Nagapattinam, thereby boosting economic activities in the region. Nitin Gadkari mentioned that the bypass route will pass through various important locations like Athipuliyur, Andipalayam, Kidaramkondan, Pallivaramangalam, Perumpugalur, Elavangarkudi, and Anaivadapathy Colony.
Upon completion, the Thiruvarur Bypass is anticipated to ease congestion in Thiruvarur town, reduce travel time by about 15 minutes, and improve road safety by diverting traffic away from densely populated and commercial areas. Additionally, the alignment will enhance connectivity to SH-23, SH-65, and the Thyagaraja Swamy Temple, contributing to infrastructure development and smoother travel experiences in the area.
Union Minister Gadkari recently assessed the quality and maintenance progress of National Highway projects in Punjab, Delhi, and Haryana, covering a total of 7,667 kilometers. He emphasized the importance of expediting on-ground execution of highway projects to ensure timely completion. Gadkari urged officials and contractors to enhance coordination, adhere strictly to project timelines, and adopt modern construction technologies and best engineering practices for improved durability and performance of National Highways.
