Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal expressed appreciation for the first-ever export of Uttarakhand’s renowned litchis to Italy, emphasizing the potential it holds for introducing Indian agricultural products into European markets. The initial shipment, consisting of 1 metric tonne of fresh litchis, marks a significant milestone in this trade endeavor.
Goyal, acknowledging the quality of Devbhoomi litchis, highlighted the successful export to Italy, facilitated with the assistance of APEDA. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership for enhancing global recognition of Indian agricultural goods, thereby creating new avenues for farmers to improve their income. The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) played a crucial role in enabling the export of fresh Uttarakhand litchis from Dehradun to Italy on June 18, signaling the entry of Uttarakhand’s premium litchis into European markets.
This export initiative not only showcases Uttarakhand’s horticultural capabilities but also reinforces India’s presence in international fresh fruit markets, showcasing the acceptance of high-quality Indian produce globally. The export of Dehradun litchis, known for their exceptional sweetness, vibrant red color, fragrant aroma, and superior pulp quality, is expected to boost the region’s reputation for varieties like Rose Scented, Calcuttia, and Bedana.
The export success has led to increased profits for farmers, with prices approximately 25% higher than domestic rates, encouraging the adoption of quality farming practices and greater involvement in export-oriented horticulture. Through collaborative efforts involving APEDA, exporters, farmer-producer organizations (FPOs), logistics partners, and other stakeholders, the shipment to Italy signifies a significant stride in diversifying India’s fresh fruit export destinations and solidifying its image as a dependable supplier of premium horticultural products.
