Union Minister of State for Railways and Food Processing Industries, Ravneet Singh Bittu, has resigned from the Union Council of Ministers. President Droupadi Murmu accepted his resignation following the advice of the Prime Minister. Bittu’s tenure in the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan ended on June 21, and despite not being renominated, he continued as a Minister under a constitutional provision allowing non-members to hold office for up to six months.
After stepping down from the Union Council of Ministers, Bittu is expected to shift his focus to upcoming political activities and Assembly elections in Punjab. Sources from the BJP indicated that his departure aims to bolster the party’s prospects in the state currently governed by the Aam Aadmi Party. Fifty-year-old Bittu, who joined the BJP in 2024 after leaving the Congress, is the grandson of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh and previously contested Lok Sabha elections unsuccessfully.
In a recent development, Bittu criticized the film ‘Satluj,’ featuring Diljit Dosanjh, for allegedly provoking controversy. He clarified that his objections were not against any religion but targeted terrorism, violence, and bloodshed. Emphasizing Sikh values of peace, courage, sacrifice, and service to humanity, Bittu highlighted the significant contributions of Sikhs across various sectors, including judiciary, armed forces, business, sports, literature, and science.
