Union Minister of State for Women and Child Development, Savitri Thakur, is set to head the Indian delegation at the 64th Session of the United Nations Commission for Social Development in New York. The event, running from February 2 to 10 at the UN Headquarters, offers a platform for nations to assess progress and share social development experiences.
India’s participation underscores its ongoing involvement in global social development initiatives and its dedication to constructive discussions on international social policy priorities. Thakur’s visit will facilitate engagements with UN agencies and representatives from other countries on social development issues.
The Commission for Social Development, a key UN Economic and Social Council commission, concentrates on enhancing international collaboration on social development matters like social inclusion, equity, and welfare-oriented policies. The event’s primary theme is centered on promoting social development and justice through coordinated, fair, and inclusive policies, with a focus on eradicating poverty and ensuring dignity through robust care systems.
Discussions at CSocD64 will emphasize translating Doha commitments into national actions with a focus on accountability, participation, and fairness. Thakur had previously led the Indian delegation at the CSocD63 session in February 2025, where she highlighted India’s efforts in enhancing digital and financial literacy among women entrepreneurs in rural areas.
Thakur emphasized India’s commitment to ‘women-led development,’ ensuring women play a pivotal role in shaping the country’s development path. The Commission reiterated its support for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as a critical opportunity to realign global priorities and bolster collective efforts.
