Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw praised a cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) model developed by Indian startup Sarvam AI. Sarvam AI was chosen last year to construct India’s inaugural AI foundational model out of 67 proposals. Vaishnaw lauded the advanced model released by Sarvam, stating that even stringent critics have commended its technological sophistication.
In addition to the AI model, Vaishnaw highlighted the innovative work being done by young engineers in fields such as materials science, healthcare, and cybersecurity. Sarvam AI has notably created top-tier text-to-speech, speech-to-text, and OCR models for Indic languages.
Sarvam AI’s Co-Founder Pratyush Kumar recently presented multilingual AI systems under the IndiaAI Mission, unveiling India’s first sovereign foundational Large Language Model (LLM) for Indian languages. The Indian government, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, sanctioned Rs 10,300 crore for the India AI Mission in 2024, aiming to boost the country’s AI ecosystem over the next five years.
PM Modi, during a recent roundtable with Indian AI startups, emphasized the importance of using AI for societal benefit. He urged startups to develop affordable, inclusive, and transparent AI solutions, emphasizing the promotion of local content and regional languages. India is set to host the ‘India AI Impact Summit 2026’ from February 16-20, positioning the country as a key player in the technology sector.
