The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has approved Rs 273.46 crore for the expansion and infrastructure development of Agartala Government Medical College, as announced by Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha. Expressing gratitude in a social media post, the Chief Minister thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda for the financial assistance to enhance medical education and healthcare infrastructure in the state.
According to the Chief Minister, the sanctioned funds will facilitate an increase of 100 MBBS seats and 83 Postgraduate seats across 19 critical and specialty disciplines starting from the academic session 2026-27. This move will raise the total MBBS seats in Tripura to 550 (across three medical colleges) and postgraduate seats to 196, representing a significant surge in medical education capacity over the past four years.
Saha, who also oversees the Health and Family Welfare portfolio, emphasized the government’s dedication to enhancing healthcare services for citizens and providing better medical education opportunities for aspiring youth in the state. Tripura currently hosts three medical colleges, including the state-run Agartala Government Medical College and Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital, the society-run Tripura Medical College & Dr B.R. Ambedkar Memorial Teaching Hospital, and the privately managed Tripura Santiniketan Medical College & Hospital.
