The United Naga Council (UNC), representing 21 Naga tribes in Manipur, has called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Government to address the escalating security situation in the state. The UNC, along with other Naga organizations, submitted a joint memorandum to the Prime Minister seeking intervention against what they perceive as a proxy war by Kuki militant groups.
The Naga bodies have accused the Kuki militants and the Myanmar-based KNA (B) of violating the Indo-Naga Framework Agreement signed in 2015 and posing a threat to India’s eastern frontier security. Leaders of the UNC are engaging with various stakeholders in Delhi to highlight the Naga perspective and request immediate constitutional and political action.
Following regret expressed by the Kuki-Zo Council over the killing of Naga hostages, the UNC emphasized the need for protection of Naga people and their lands. The UNC has demanded a thorough investigation into the abduction and killing of Naga civilians, as well as concrete security assurances for Naga-inhabited areas facing threats and incursions.
The UNC stressed the historical significance of certain Naga-inhabited regions and urged authorities to view the situation beyond a mere law-and-order problem. They alleged cross-border armed movements and coordinated assaults on Naga villages, emphasizing the need for serious attention to safeguard Naga security and territorial integrity.
