The ongoing unrest in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) has prompted demands for an independent fact-finding mission by the United Nations and other international bodies. The turmoil, which began in 2023, was triggered by protests against high electricity tariffs and flour shortages in the region.
The Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JKJAAC), a coalition of various groups, has put forth a 38-point charter of demands, including subsidized essential goods and electoral reforms. Additionally, residents of PoK have raised concerns about paying elevated electricity tariffs compared to other parts of Pakistan.
The situation in PoK has led to strikes, clashes, and heavy security presence in areas like Muzaffarabad and Rawalakot. Reports indicate casualties and injuries resulting from the clashes, with calls for an independent international investigation into the incidents. The unrest has also seen the imposition of restrictions, arrests, and internet shutdowns by Pakistani authorities in PoK.
Protests in PoK have drawn attention to grievances related to governance and economic disparities in the region. The international community has been urged to intervene and address the alleged human rights violations, civilian casualties, and arbitrary arrests by the Pakistani army in PoK. The unrest not only reflects local issues but also challenges Pakistan’s Kashmir policy and its narrative on the region.
