The United States and Japan, in a joint statement, reiterated their dedication to achieving the complete denuclearisation of North Korea. They dismissed Russia’s claim that North Korea’s nuclear ambitions were a closed matter during defense discussions in Tokyo. The talks aimed to enhance security cooperation in response to China’s assertiveness and North Korea’s nuclear threats.
Both nations emphasized the importance of denuclearising North Korea, known officially as the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). They also addressed concerns about China’s nuclear weapons expansion and rejected Russia’s assertion that North Korea’s pursuit of nuclear arms was resolved. The discussions covered US efforts to modernise its nuclear forces and Japan’s defense policies in light of escalating regional nuclear threats.
Japan supported US initiatives for multilateral strategic stability talks to prevent a nuclear arms race and enhance transparency. The meeting, co-chaired by US and Japanese officials, included representatives from various military commands. Meanwhile, a US diplomat reiterated Washington’s commitment to North Korea’s denuclearisation at an International Atomic Energy Agency meeting, stressing ongoing concerns about Pyongyang’s nuclear activities.
