The US Embassy in Islamabad is closely monitoring reports of protests at the US Consulates General in Karachi and Lahore, along with calls for demonstrations at the US Embassy in Islamabad and Consulate General Peshawar. Advising US citizens in Pakistan to stay informed through local news and practice good personal security measures, the embassy emphasized the importance of awareness of surroundings, avoidance of large crowds, and ensuring up-to-date STEP registration.
In Karachi, nine individuals lost their lives as clashes erupted between protesters and law enforcement near the US Consulate on Mai Kolachi Road. The demonstrations were fueled by outrage over US and Israel’s actions against Iran, following the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in airstrikes. According to a hospital official, 34 others sustained injuries during the protests near the consulate.
In response to the escalating situation, a curfew was enforced in the Skardu district of Pakistan-occupied Gilgit Baltistan. Protesters in the Skardu and Gilgit regions set ablaze various establishments, including the offices of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP), a school, the superintendent of police’s office, and the Agha Khan Rural Support Programme (AKRSP) office. The Pakistan Army was deployed under Section 245 of the Pakistan Penal Code to maintain order, with no reported casualties during the protests.
