Growing concerns over China’s rapid progress in artificial intelligence (AI) have led to a significant collaboration between US lawmakers and Silicon Valley. At the Hill and Valley Forum, a platform fostering connections between Washington and Big Tech, leaders from both government and industry have acknowledged the importance of competing with China in AI for national security and global dominance. US Senator Rick Scott emphasized the critical need for the US to surpass China in AI capabilities, describing the competition as existential.

The discussions at the forum revealed a shared belief that China poses a central challenge in the AI race, with policymakers and tech executives cautioning that the outcome could reshape economic and geopolitical power dynamics. Despite historical tensions over regulation, there is a growing consensus on the necessity to outpace China in AI development. Chipmaker Nvidia came under scrutiny for its exports of advanced AI chips to China and alleged smuggling of such technologies through unauthorized channels.

US House Speaker Mike Johnson urged tech companies to safeguard critical infrastructure like chips, data centers, and AI systems within the US to prevent them from falling into the hands of geopolitical rivals. Lawmakers are advocating for stricter controls, including proposed legislation like the GAIN AI Act, which would mandate companies to prioritize domestic access to advanced AI chips and obtain licenses before exporting them to countries of concern. Industry leaders echoed the urgency of maintaining AI leadership to secure global economic dominance, with some investors expressing reluctance to support ventures that could benefit rival nations.

Experts are calling for enhanced collaboration between the government and industry to address the competitive AI landscape effectively. Defense technology leaders emphasized the need for a balanced approach, advocating for stronger cooperation to uphold US competitiveness. While the US remains a frontrunner in AI innovation, China’s focus on practical deployment and economic utilization of AI poses a growing challenge to American dominance in the field.
