Democratic lawmakers in the United States have criticized President Donald Trump’s actions towards Iran as gasoline prices surge nationwide. They are urging the White House to release oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to alleviate the financial pressure on American families.
Oil prices have reached triple digits for the first time in four years, with crude oil nearing $120 a barrel due to disruptions in energy flows from the Middle East. This spike has led to a significant increase in fuel costs across the country.
Indian American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi highlighted that the rising fuel costs are directly impacting families who are already struggling with their living expenses. He criticized President Trump’s approach towards Iran, stating that families are finding it difficult to afford the increased gas prices.
Krishnamoorthi called on the administration to promptly release oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to help stabilize fuel prices. He emphasized the necessity of this action to mitigate the financial burden on American families.
Michigan Congresswoman Haley Stevens also condemned the administration, stating that American families are bearing the financial consequences of the conflict with Iran. She criticized Trump’s policies, highlighting the chaos they create globally and the increased financial strain on American households.
Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer urged the administration to tap into the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, emphasizing that the conflict with Iran is causing a sharp rise in energy costs nationwide. He stressed the importance of utilizing the reserve during times of energy market disruptions.
Gas prices have surged by approximately 43 cents per gallon since the conflict began on February 28, reaching around $3.41 per gallon nationwide. This represents a 14% increase in just one week and marks the highest levels seen since 2024.
Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin criticized the administration’s handling of the conflict with Iran, highlighting the adverse impacts on gas prices and the lack of a clear strategy. He expressed concerns about the human and economic costs associated with wars.
The Democratic National Committee also voiced criticism, stating that the rising fuel prices add to the economic challenges faced by American families. They emphasized the financial strain on working families due to the escalating costs of basic necessities.
