A US Navy guided-missile destroyer intercepted an Iranian-flagged cargo ship attempting to evade the US blockade in the Strait of Hormuz. The USS Spruance successfully redirected the vessel back to Iran, making it the tenth vessel turned around since the blockade began.

US Central Command’s Brad Cooper stated that US forces have effectively halted sea trade to and from Iran. In related news, top US commanders in the Indo-Pacific are scheduled to testify before Senate and House committees in Washington next week, amid concerns over potential impacts of US-Israeli actions against Iran on addressing threats from China and North Korea.

Adm. Samuel Paparo and Gen. Xavier Brunson will address the US military posture and security challenges in the region during the upcoming hearings. Reports indicate US movements of its THAAD missile defense system from South Korea to the Middle East and the dispatch of US Marines from Japan to the volatile region. These actions come amidst worries that the focus on the Middle East may detract from addressing challenges posed by China and North Korea.
