Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Paul Kapur, speaking at the hearing, expressed optimism about Bangladesh’s electoral process. He emphasized the importance of the US engaging with the newly elected government to foster economic ties and promote stability in the region. Kapur also underscored the significance of defense cooperation in safeguarding borders and infrastructure against external threats.
Highlighting the broader regional context, Kapur mentioned the strategic importance of countries like Bangladesh, Nepal, Maldives, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan. He stressed the need for US engagement to support these nations’ autonomy and resilience, especially in the face of potential coercion. Kapur also mentioned recent trade agreements between the US and Bangladesh, aiming to provide American exporters access to Bangladesh’s sizable market.
