US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reiterated America’s security pledge to Bahrain during discussions with King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. Both nations vowed to enhance collaboration on regional security, freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, and preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. The meeting in Manama solidified the US commitment to Bahrain’s security and the Comprehensive Security Integration and Prosperity Agreement (C-SIPA), a foundation for their strategic partnership.
Rubio, after co-chairing a ministerial meeting between the US and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), emphasized shared goals for regional stability, secure passage through the Strait of Hormuz, and preventing Iran’s nuclear armament. The discussions also delved into expanding economic cooperation beyond the existing security alliance, focusing on sectors like energy, artificial intelligence, and critical minerals.
During the meeting, Rubio condemned recent Iranian assaults on Bahrain and reiterated unwavering US support for the kingdom. He assured that Gulf partners would be fully informed during negotiations with Iran to safeguard their security and stability. Rubio also affirmed US opposition to any attempts to levy charges on international shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, aligning with the unanimous stance among Gulf allies.
The dialogue highlighted Bahrain’s significance as a key security ally for the US in the Gulf region, especially amidst heightened regional diplomacy following the US-Iran agreement and endeavors to achieve a broader settlement.
