The US Senate has moved forward with Senator Markwayne Mullin’s nomination as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) secretary, following President Donald Trump’s announcement of replacing current DHS Secretary Kristi Noem. The nomination was advanced in a 54 to 37 vote, with a final confirmation vote expected soon. Mullin, aged 48, has been a Senator since 2023, previously serving in the House representing Oklahoma.
This nomination reflects bipartisan dissatisfaction with Noem’s leadership, marking the first Cabinet change in Trump’s second term. Trump confirmed Mullin’s appointment through a post on Truth Social, praising the Senator from Oklahoma. Noem faced criticism after federal officers shot two US citizens in Minneapolis and drew Trump’s ire for her actions at congressional hearings.
Noem, the former governor of South Dakota, faced challenges due to her state-level background when leading a federal department. Despite attempts to showcase leadership by joining immigration officers on raids and endorsing Trump’s migration policies, she was dismissed following controversies. Trump had commended her efforts in immigration control and planned to appoint her as a Special Envoy for “The Shield of the Americas,” focusing on regional issues like drug trafficking and illegal migration.
