Durbin shared how Puri’s humble beginnings led him to Rockford, where he strived to pursue education at Rockford College, now known as Rockford University. Despite financial constraints, Puri managed to put himself through college by working various jobs, demonstrating his perseverance and dedication. The local community’s support was also crucial in Puri’s early years, as they embraced him, setting the stage for his future success.
After graduating with an accounting degree, Puri established First Rockford Group, later rebranded as First Midwest Group, a real estate development firm that played a pivotal role in revitalizing neglected properties in Rockford. Through their efforts, abandoned structures were transformed into vibrant establishments like restaurants, offices, and warehouses, contributing significantly to the city’s economic growth and job market.
Apart from his business ventures, Puri’s philanthropic endeavors in Rockford were extensive, reflecting his belief in giving back to the community. His generous donations and active involvement in various community projects, such as the Keeling-Puri Peace Plaza and the Salvation Army Puri Family Disaster Services Center, left a lasting impact.
