Two US senators, Ted Cruz and Jeff Merkley, have put forward a bill to impose sanctions on those involved in alleged forced organ harvesting in China. The legislation, known as the Falun Gong and Victims of Forced Organ Harvesting Protection Act, aims to target individuals responsible for these actions and mandates the US administration to report on China’s transplant system. Cruz criticized the Chinese government for running a state-sponsored organ harvesting industry that specifically targets religious practitioners, especially Falun Gong members.
The proposed bill requires the President to impose sanctions on foreign individuals found to be involved in or supporting forced organ harvesting in China. Sanctions could include measures like blocking property and financial transactions. Additionally, the legislation calls for the submission of a list of responsible individuals to Congress within 180 days of the law’s enactment, with annual updates thereafter. Moreover, it directs the US Secretary of State, in collaboration with other key officials, to present a detailed report on China’s organ transplant policies and practices within a year.
Senator Merkley emphasized bipartisan concern over reports of abuses against vulnerable groups in China, stating that the bill aims to hold the Chinese government accountable for its actions. The legislators stressed the importance of standing up for the victims of these crimes and ensuring that those responsible face consequences for their actions. The bill reflects a united effort to address the reported human rights violations and repression in China, particularly concerning forced organ harvesting practices.
