A group of four US senators has called on President Donald Trump to take a tough stance on China’s shipbuilding policies during his upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The senators, including Tammy Baldwin, Mark Kelly, Todd Young, and Tim Scott, emphasized that China’s practices have harmed the American maritime industry and posed a threat to US national security.
Highlighting China’s unfair tactics, such as subsidies and state-backed financing, the senators expressed concern over China’s dominance in global shipbuilding. They stressed that the United States cannot afford to lose ground to China in this critical sector and should not make concessions on shipbuilding and maritime trade.
The lawmakers underscored the importance of supporting American shipyards, which not only contribute to the economy but also play a vital role in national security. They commended the Trump administration’s efforts to address the issue, including imposing fees on Chinese-built ships docking at US ports and imposing additional charges on companies using Chinese-built vessels.
In addition, the senators urged Trump to back the SHIPS for America Act, a bipartisan initiative aimed at revitalizing the domestic maritime industry. Senator Baldwin, a proponent of expanding shipbuilding capacity in the Great Lakes region, emphasized that strengthening the sector would boost American manufacturing and job creation.
The letter comes amid escalating tensions between the US and China across various strategic fronts, including trade, technology, and military power. With China’s expanding naval and commercial fleet posing a strategic challenge in the Indo-Pacific region, shipbuilding has emerged as a key concern for US defense planners.
