As the USS Cincinnati, an American warship, arrived at Cambodia’s Ream Naval Base, concerns arose about potential regional implications. This marks the first time a US Navy warship has docked at this Cambodian facility following its renovation by Chinese state firms last year.
The visit of the US warship coincides with a significant meeting between the head of US Indo-Pacific Command and the Cambodian Defence Minister. Speculation emerged regarding possible exclusive Chinese access to the base, given China’s close ties with Cambodia in terms of aid and investment.
In 2019, reports surfaced about an agreement between China and Cambodia for the Chinese military’s use of the base for 30 years, a claim that Beijing denied. Despite repeated denials by the Cambodian government, concerns persist about potential preferential treatment for Chinese interests.
The USS Cincinnati, an Independence-class littoral combat ship capable of operating in shallow waters, carries a crew of around 100. During its visit from January 24 to 28, the crew is set to participate in various activities in the nearby city of Sihanoukville, as reported by Wral news.
The deputy commander of the base emphasized the port’s openness to all foreign vessels wishing to dock in Cambodia, welcoming American, Australian, Japanese, and other ships. Additionally, a statement from the Cambodian Navy highlighted that over 37 US warships had previously visited Cambodian facilities between 2003 and 2026.
