Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak criticized the Samajwadi Party for what he called a “double game” following protests by SP legislators outside the state Assembly demanding the implementation of 33% women reservation. Pathak highlighted that despite advocating for women’s reservation, the SP voted against the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, which aimed to reserve 33% of parliamentary seats for women. The bill failed to secure the required two-thirds majority for passage.
Pathak pointed out that despite Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s willingness to guarantee a 50% increase in seats for states, the SP Chief, Akhilesh Yadav, denied support for the Bill. He accused both the Samajwadi Party and Congress of playing a double game and emphasized that their actions would have consequences. Pathak also alleged that the opposition’s resistance to women’s reservation rights has hindered the implementation of such bills for decades.
Moreover, Pathak criticized the Congress and Samajwadi Party for opposing the women’s reservation, which aims to empower women in decision-making processes. He noted that the opposition’s continuous resistance has prevented the implementation of the women’s reservation bill since independence. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath convened a special session in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly to discuss and pass a motion condemning the opposition’s efforts to block the Women’s Reservation Bill.
Deputy Chief Minister Pathak highlighted that the motion was unanimously passed in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, indicating solidarity with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s stance on women’s empowerment. He praised the BJP government’s efforts under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership to implement schemes that uphold women’s rights.
