The Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) has officially announced a 10% Fuel and Power Purchase Adjustment Surcharge (FPPAS) on electricity bills for June. This surcharge will impact consumers across all categories in the state. The decision aims to recover the additional costs incurred in power procurement and transmission as per the regulations set by the Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission.
The 10% increase, corresponding to March, will be collected through electricity bills issued in June, as per the May 29 order. Consumers will bear an extra burden on their monthly power bills due to this fuel surcharge adjustment mechanism. The Fuel and Power Purchase Adjustment Surcharge is applied to compensate distribution companies for fuel price fluctuations and increased electricity purchasing costs from various sources.
This move comes at a time when many parts of Uttar Pradesh are facing prolonged power outages due to an intense heatwave, with temperatures exceeding 45 degrees Celsius in several districts. The high temperatures have led to a surge in electricity consumption as households, businesses, and industries heavily rely on cooling appliances to combat the extreme weather conditions.
Despite recent improvements in transmission infrastructure and power transmission capacity in Uttar Pradesh, the surge in electricity demand, up by nearly 5,000 MW compared to previous years, has outpaced the growth. Officials acknowledge the challenge of meeting the rapidly increasing consumer demand for electricity.
