The Uttarakhand administration has launched ‘Operation Kalnemi’ to enhance surveillance at Kedarnath Dham, cracking down on rule-breakers and imposters posing as saints. This initiative aims to prevent fraud and exploitation of devotees by identifying and penalizing offenders. So far, 15 imposters have been fined during the drive.
Kedarnath Dham, which welcomed devotees in April, is experiencing a surge in pilgrim footfall, with thousands visiting daily to pay homage to Lord Shiva. To maintain security and orderliness, the state administration and police are closely monitoring the area under ‘Operation Kalnemi.’ This statewide campaign, initiated in July 2025, targets individuals masquerading as Hindu sadhus to deceive and exploit devotees.
Under the operation, action is being taken against fake ‘babas’ residing in Kedarnath without proper police verification or valid identity documents. A recent inspection by the Kedarnath police post, overseen by the Yatra Magistrate, uncovered several individuals lacking police verification or valid Aadhaar cards. Those found violating security protocols are facing legal consequences, with 15 people issued fines during the crackdown.
Individuals without valid identity documents are being sent back from Kedarnath Dham to Gaurikund as a precautionary measure. Police authorities have affirmed that surprise inspections will continue to uphold the sanctity and efficient management of the pilgrimage. They emphasized the necessity of proper verification and documentation for individuals staying in the Dham area during the Char Dham Yatra.
