Amid the uproar over the killing of a Tripura student in Dehradun, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami reached out to the victim’s father, Tarun Prasad Chakma. The victim, 24-year-old Angel Chakma, was involved in an altercation that turned violent, resulting in his tragic demise on December 26. The accused, including Suraj Khawas and five others, allegedly attacked Angel, leading to his hospitalization and subsequent death.
Angel’s father, Tarun Chakma, serving in Manipur with the Border Security Force, highlighted the racial aspect of the assault, mentioning that his son was subjected to derogatory remarks during the attack. Chief Minister Dhami expressed deep sorrow over the incident and confirmed the arrest of five suspects, with efforts ongoing to capture another accused who is believed to have fled to Nepal. A reward has been announced for information leading to the apprehension of the absconding suspect.
Ensuring strict action against the culprits, Chief Minister Dhami emphasized the government’s commitment to delivering justice. He acknowledged the diverse student community in Uttarakhand and condemned the incident, vowing stringent measures in such cases. Additionally, he engaged with Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to address the matter comprehensively.
The state police have offered a reward for the missing suspect and are coordinating with Nepalese authorities for his capture. Five individuals, including minors, have already been taken into custody. The case, initially registered for bodily harm and criminal intimidation, escalated to include murder charges following Angel’s demise. The arrested suspects, apart from Suraj Khawas, have been identified as Avinash Negi and Sumit.
