Uyghur Minority Faces Severe Restrictions in China, Report Reveals

The Uyghur minority in China has been subjected to strict limitations since 2014 due to the Chinese Communist Party’s policies, particularly the ‘Strike Hard Campaign Against Violent Terrorism’. This initiative has led to widespread human rights violations against the Turkic Muslim population in Xinjiang, as highlighted in various reports.

Reports from organizations like Stanford Law School’s Human Rights and Conflict Resolution Clinic and Human Rights Watch have shed light on the extensive human rights abuses faced by Uyghurs. It has been estimated that millions of Uyghurs and other Muslims are being held in prisons and labor camps, where they reportedly endure torture, forced labor, and political indoctrination.

An investigation by London-based ‘The Bureau of Investigative Journalism (TBIJ)’ has linked over a hundred global brands to factories exploiting Uyghur and other minority workers in what authorities term as “forced labor” camps. Researchers and human rights watchdogs have raised concerns about the mass transfer of Muslim minority workers, labeling it as state-imposed forced labor with coercive elements.

United Nations experts recently expressed deep concerns over allegations of forced labor affecting Uyghur, Kazakh, and Kyrgyz minority groups, as well as Tibetans in Xinjiang and other parts of China. They highlighted a pattern of alleged state-imposed forced labor involving ethnic minorities across multiple Chinese provinces, with coercive measures amounting to crimes against humanity.

Forced labor in China is facilitated through the State’s “poverty alleviation through labor transfer” program, coercing Uyghurs and other minorities into jobs in Xinjiang and beyond. These individuals face extensive monitoring, surveillance, and exploitation, with no freedom to reject or alter their work due to fear of punishment and arbitrary detention. The experts noted that Xinjiang’s five-year plan includes a significant number of labor transfers, surpassing initial projections, all under the guise of poverty alleviation.
