Two long-standing CPI-M politicians from Kannur, a stronghold in Kerala, have made unexpected strides by transitioning from party stalwarts to legislators after defeating official CPI-M candidates. V. Kunjikrishnan and T.K. Govindan, seasoned leaders deeply rooted in Kannur politics, achieved significant victories in the recent Assembly elections with support from the Congress-led UDF.
Inside the Assembly, both legislators shared insights on their post-election journey, highlighting the initial hurdles they faced and their evolving roles as elected representatives. Kunjikrishnan, who triumphed over incumbent CPI-M MLA T.I. Madhusoodhan in Payyannur, expressed satisfaction with the current situation both in his constituency and within the legislative chamber.
Reflecting on the challenges encountered in the early days of assuming office, Kunjikrishnan acknowledged the practical difficulties, such as establishing a constituency office for community engagement and coordination. He noted the positive transformation since then, emphasizing the improved circumstances.
In another surprising turn of events, T.K. Govindan secured victory in Thaliparambu by defeating P.K. Shyamala, the wife of CPI-M state Secretary M.V. Govindan. This outcome holds symbolic significance for the Left in Kannur, given that the constituency was previously represented by M.V. Govindan himself.
Despite initial obstacles, T.K. Govindan is now dedicated to fulfilling his duties as an MLA, emphasizing his commitment to serving his constituents and utilizing the Assembly platform effectively. The presence of these two leaders in the Assembly marks a rare political shift in Kannur, challenging the CPI-M’s longstanding dominance in the district.
The victories of Kunjikrishnan and Govindan underscore the importance of personal relationships, local acceptance, and political realignments in disrupting entrenched party strongholds. As they look ahead, the focus for both leaders is on demonstrating their capabilities in this new chapter of their political careers.
