The Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference in Central Gujarat will feature Sankheda furniture, a renowned traditional craft of the state. Scheduled for June 29 and 30 at GSFC University in Vadodara, the event aims to connect local artisans with broader markets while preserving this centuries-old art form. Sankheda furniture, known for its vibrant lacquer work and intricate designs, is crafted by the Kharadi artisan community near Vadodara.
The initiative by the state government seeks to link traditional artisans and industries with new markets under the vision of ‘Viksit Gujarat to Viksit Bharat.’ This craft, dating back around 200 years, has evolved into one of Gujarat’s most distinctive handicrafts. Recognized with a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, Sankheda furniture reflects the unique identity of the region and is now sold across various Indian cities and overseas markets.
The Gujarat State Handloom and Handicrafts Development Corporation has taken steps to support artisans by providing training in modern design, quality improvement, and marketing. These efforts have led to a 20 to 40 per cent increase in artisans’ incomes. Sankheda furniture, including swings, stools, chairs, and dining tables, showcases intricate detailing and skills passed down through generations. The craft has gained popularity in cities like Ahmedabad, Delhi, and Mumbai, as well as international markets such as the US, UK, Canada, and UAE.
