Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan highlighted the importance of mental resilience in battling cancer. He urged citizens, particularly the youth, to avoid intoxicants, tobacco, and similar substances to lower cancer risks. Emphasizing the need for widespread public awareness campaigns on cancer prevention, he mentioned the emergence of tablet-based treatments as a promising alternative to chemotherapy.
Recent medical advancements, especially in tablet-based therapies, were acknowledged by the Vice President at an event by the Cancer Society of India. He also expressed concerns about the increasing annual cancer cases and stressed the significance of access to clean drinking water.
Under schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, eligible patients can receive free treatment up to Rs 5 lakh per year, covering major cancer treatments like surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. For financially disadvantaged patients, provisions of up to Rs 15 lakh are available, offering substantial relief. Additionally, nearly 75% of rural funds allocated under the National Health Mission are currently utilized for cancer prevention efforts.
Highlighting cervical cancer as the second most common cancer in India, the Vice President mentioned government measures like vaccination and enhanced treatment protocols. He praised Rajasthan’s proactive stance in combating cancer and commended cancer survivors for their inspirational role.
Governor Haribhau Bagde advocated for a dedicated ‘Cancer-Free Rajasthan Campaign,’ drawing parallels with successful health initiatives. He cautioned against tobacco use, citing its strong association with cancer, and emphasized the importance of clean water access and chemical-free food to reduce cancer risks. Minister of Medical and Health Department, Gajendra Singh Khimsar, stressed the significance of awareness programs and ongoing healthcare service enhancements in the state.
During the event, a film honoring cancer survivors was unveiled by the Vice President, Governor, and Health Minister, with the presence of dignitaries including Rajya Sabha MP Radha Mohan Agarwal.
