A clash broke out in Jaipur between protesters and police after a Mahapanchayat of nomadic and semi-nomadic communities demanding 10% reservation. The protesters tried to march towards the Chief Minister’s residence but were stopped by police, leading to violence. Stones were thrown at police, resulting in a lathi-charge and tear gas to disperse the crowd.
Around a dozen people, including police and locals, were injured during the clash. The situation was eventually controlled with a heavy police presence, and about 50 protesters were detained. The protesters had gathered at Vidyadhar Nagar Stadium for the Mahapanchayat to push for their reservation demand.
After the meeting, protesters announced a march towards the Chief Minister’s residence, but police had already set up barricades. A scuffle ensued when protesters tried to breach the barricades, escalating into violence. Police had earlier facilitated talks between protesters and officials, which turned aggressive despite positive discussions.
The police were forced to use measures like a lathi-charge and tear gas as protesters turned violent, injuring several people. Opposition leader Tika Ram Jully criticized the police action, condemning the use of force during what he described as a peaceful protest by the DNT community. Jully urged the government to address the concerns of the marginalized community through dialogue.
