A dispute between a young couple in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur district spiraled into a violent clash involving two families, resulting in the torching of vehicles and the booking of around 16 individuals on serious charges, as per the police. The incident took place in Majhauli, located about 48 km from Jabalpur city, late Friday night. The police revealed that a young man and woman from the area had been in a relationship, but the woman declined to marry him without her family’s consent.
The woman’s decision led to her marriage being arranged elsewhere, which allegedly upset the young man. He is accused of sharing the woman’s photos and messages with the family she was supposed to marry into, causing the alliance to be called off. This situation led to tensions between the Saraf and Tiwari families, who attempted to resolve the issue but failed, further intensifying the dispute. Members of both families gathered at the market square in front of the police station, where a verbal altercation turned violent, resulting in the burning of two parked vehicles.
The incident caused panic in the area, attracting a large crowd. Police officers intervened to control the situation, and the fire brigade extinguished the flames. Jabalpur’s Superintendent of Police, Sampat Upadhyay, explained that the conflict arose from disagreements between the families regarding the relationship between the young man and woman. Both sides have had counter-cases filed against them, with approximately 16 individuals facing charges including rioting. The matter is currently under investigation, with additional police deployed in the area as a precautionary measure.
