Five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand has taken on the role of interim president at the International Chess Federation (FIDE) after current president Arkady Dvorkovich faced sanctions from the European Union. Anand expressed his commitment to continuing FIDE’s work and focusing on serving the global chess community.
Following the sanctions against Dvorkovich, he voluntarily suspended his presidential duties in compliance with EU and Swiss laws. As per the FIDE Charter, Anand, who serves as FIDE’s deputy president, has been appointed as the interim president until Dvorkovich is no longer subject to the sanctions.
Anand acknowledged Dvorkovich’s decision to prioritize FIDE’s interests and stability. He emphasized the importance of continuity in FIDE’s operations and expressed gratitude for the foundation laid by Dvorkovich. Anand, along with the FIDE Council and member federations, aims to maintain the momentum and vision set by the former president.
AICF president Nitin Narang praised Anand’s appointment, highlighting his esteemed reputation and dedication to chess. Narang expressed confidence in Anand’s leadership, foreseeing a continuation of FIDE’s commitment to good governance and support for players worldwide.
