Vizhinjam International Seaport is gearing up to launch full-fledged gateway export-import (EXIM) cargo operations starting from August 18. This move will transition the deep-water port from being solely an international transshipment hub to becoming a key gateway for India’s overseas trade. Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan will officially inaugurate the EXIM operations, marking a significant milestone for Kerala’s largest infrastructure project.
With the commencement of EXIM operations, Vizhinjam will expand its role in the country’s maritime sector by handling cargo originating from and destined for Indian importers and exporters. The Commissioner of Customs (Preventive), Kochi, has issued detailed operational guidelines that outline the procedures and regulations for shipping lines, exporters, importers, customs brokers, terminal operators, and logistics service providers.
Previously functioning primarily as an international transshipment hub, Vizhinjam will now also cater to India’s export and import cargo needs. This development will provide businesses in Kerala and neighboring regions direct access to international shipping services through Vizhinjam. The port will initially focus on Direct Port Delivery (DPD) of Full Container Load (FCL) containers for imports, with strict timelines for cargo movement to the importers’ premises.
