Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk concluded his 26-day hunger strike, with wife Gitanjali J Angmo expressing satisfaction over the movement’s success in demanding accountability for exam paper leaks and pushing for educational reforms. Angmo highlighted that the government has pledged not to take legal action against students, reassuring the security of protesters.
She mentioned that student leaders will determine the next steps after discussions with the government, emphasizing the government’s commitment to refrain from using force or legal measures against protesters. Additionally, Angmo stated that families of students affected by the NEET paper leak will receive compensation, and educational reforms will be deliberated in Parliament.
Angmo stressed the movement’s achievements, noting widespread political support for addressing the issues raised during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament. She underlined that the success of the agitation marks the initial phase, with a continued focus on educational reforms nationwide. Angmo also highlighted the awakening of the country to systemic issues beyond education, resonating with common grievances.
Regarding Sonam Wangchuk’s recovery, Angmo mentioned his current liquid diet to restart his digestive system gradually, with plans to transition to semi-solids and solids in due course.
