The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued a weather alert predicting widespread rainfall and strong winds in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal over the next few days due to a deep depression forming over the Bay of Bengal and the equatorial Indian Ocean.
An atmospheric circulation over the central Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal led to the formation of a low-pressure area, which intensified into a deep depression by January 6 and is expected to move west-northwestward, further intensifying into a low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal.
On January 7, coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal may experience light to moderate rain, while interior Tamil Nadu is likely to remain dry with isolated morning mist. Rainfall activity is expected to increase on January 8, with thunderstorms and heavy rain forecasted in several places.
Thunderstorms with light to moderate rain are expected in many places on January 10, with very heavy rain possible in some areas. Chennai may see partly cloudy skies on January 7, with temperatures ranging from 23 to 29 degrees Celsius and strong surface winds along the coast.
