In an unexpected move, the treasury bench in the West Bengal Assembly denounced the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) shortly before the interim budget presentation. The Speaker, Biman Bandopadhyay, declined discussion on the motion due to a pending crucial hearing at the Supreme Court, scheduled for February 9.
Suvendu Adhikari, the opposition leader, expressed disappointment over the lack of prior information about the motion discussion cancellation. He highlighted that the BJP’s legislative team, as the primary opposition party, should have been informed in advance.
Before the motion, Governor C.V. Ananda Bose initiated the budget session with an opening speech but left it incomplete. Adhikari defended the Governor’s decision, stating that the speech, drafted by the state government, contained falsehoods, justifying the Governor’s actions.
Adhikari raised objections regarding the unequal time allocation for discussing the Governor’s address, with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee allotted one hour and the opposition leader only 10 minutes. Expressing dissatisfaction, Adhikari suggested it would have been preferable not to allocate any time for his speech.
