West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as the legislator from Bhabanipur constituency in South Kolkata at the Assembly. By taking this oath, Adhikari indicated his intention to resign from the Nandigram Assembly constituency, where he was also elected in the recent polls.
Adhikari secured victory in Bhabanipur by defeating the Trinamool Congress candidate and former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee with a lead of more than 15,000 votes. In Nandigram, he won against Trinamool Congress’ Pabitra Kar by over 9,000 votes, marking his second victory over Mamata Banerjee.
This marks the second time Adhikari has defeated Mamata Banerjee, with the first instance being in 2021 when he won from Nandigram by a margin of less than 2,000 votes. Following this, Mamata Banerjee won a by-election in 2021 from Bhabanipur, securing her third consecutive term as Chief Minister.
