A chartered flight carrying West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee encountered landing issues at Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport. The flight, returning from campaign rallies in West Burdwan and Birbhum districts, was delayed due to adverse weather conditions. Despite being airborne for over an hour, the flight eventually landed safely around 5.30 p.m.
The pilot sought landing clearance upon reaching Kolkata but was initially denied due to heavy rainfall and gusty winds. Following an hour-long delay, improved weather conditions allowed the aircraft to land. Chief Minister Banerjee, who did not address the media upon arrival, departed for her residence.
Kolkata Airport reported disruptions in flight operations due to the inclement weather, affecting both arrivals and departures. There were considerations of diverting the Chief Minister’s flight to a nearby airport if conditions did not improve. Fortunately, the weather cleared, enabling a safe landing and alleviating concerns.
The incident occurred as West Bengal gears up for Assembly elections on April 23 and April 29, with results slated for May 4.
