The new Chief Minister of West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, has suspended three IPS officers, including a former Kolkata Police Commissioner, in connection with the rape and murder of a junior doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata in August 2024. The suspended officers are Vineet Kumar Goyal, Abhishek Gupta, and Indira Mukherjee.
CM Adhikari announced the suspension, stating that a departmental probe will be initiated against them. He also mentioned that the role of former CM Mamata Banerjee in the case will be reviewed. Adhikari emphasized the mishandling of the investigation and alleged attempts to bribe the victim’s family.
The Chief Minister highlighted the need for a thorough investigation, including examining WhatsApp chats and interactions with former state ministers. He clarified that the state government’s probe will not interfere with the ongoing CBI investigation. The incident had sparked widespread protests and demands for resignations of the officers involved.
