In his inaugural visit to Murshidabad district as the new Chief Minister of West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari emphasized the need to curb “hooliganism” and “corruption” in government operations. Addressing a public gathering in Rejinagar and later attending an administrative review meeting in Baharampur, Adhikari highlighted the upcoming implementation of the West Bengal Public Safety & Control of Anti-Social Activities Bill, 2026, effective from July 14. The Chief Minister assured that stringent actions would be taken to eradicate activities like damaging public property, attacking law enforcement facilities, and assaulting officials, ensuring a safer environment.
Adhikari pledged to enhance women’s safety and combat human trafficking by expediting legal proceedings in such cases. He specifically mentioned areas like Shamserganj and Dhulian in Murshidabad, vowing to prevent any recurrence of disturbances through strict measures. Adhikari urged citizens to report police performance issues to his office for swift redressal but cautioned against vigilantism, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy towards any instigation of violence. He reiterated that any form of violence incitement or unlawful behavior would face severe consequences.
During the administrative review session, Adhikari stressed the importance of eradicating corruption within the state machinery and instructed officials to ensure that welfare benefits under government schemes reach only deserving recipients. He also raised concerns about the proliferation of counterfeit birth and caste certificates, instructing the state police to collaborate closely with the Border Security Force (BSF) to prevent illegal border crossings, especially along Murshidabad’s extensive international border with Bangladesh.
